Welcome to Darien
Darien (pronounced “Dairy-Ann”) is another amazing town on Connecticut's Gold Coast. Just up the coast passed Greenwich and sandwiched between Stamford and Norwalk, Darien was settled in about 1641 by men from New Haven, Norwalk, and Wethersfield. In 1739, the first community church was built, now the location of the First Congregational Church of Darien.
Originally named Middlesex Parish, residents of the town could not decide on a name to replace it. Naturally many wanted to name it after themselves. Eventually, a suggestion was made to name the town after a veteran of the revolutionary war. The veteran swiftly rejected the offer and made an alternate suggestion. To name it after the Isthmus of Darien, which was part of the Spanish Empire.
Fast forward, to the end of the civil war and the advent of the railroad, resorts sprang up as did wealthy New Yorkers' summer homes.
With 16.5 miles of coastline, 5 harbors, easy access to I-95, and commuter trains into NYC make this a great place to live.
